Monthly News Letter - September 2010

REPORT FROM BUSINESS MANAGER

THOMAS MONTANO

I’ll begin my report with an update on my condition. As I mentioned in my August regular meeting report I suffered three skull fractures in an incident in Colorado Springs at the 5 State Conference. I still have blood and air on my brain. I still suffer from headaches and dizzy spells. For the most part, as long as I take my medication, it is under control. I am spending more time I the office now as opposed to working from home. Dr’s say it just going to take time to completely heal. Danny Beavers is been taking care of some of the business when I am not available.

We met last month to give a second presentation to the Santa Fe Public School Board.  The meeting was positive and the Superintendent was very interested in the aspects of using Community Workforce Agreements (CWA’s). The Mayor David Coss of Santa Fe is also anxious to apply CWA’s to all the construction projects in Santa Fe over $60,000.00 dollars. He has stated to us that he has the votes on the City Council to get it passed. We are working with their attorney to get the draft to legislation. If we can get both of these this done, it will be a giant step forward in our efforts to do this on a statewide basis.

Our signatory contractors have started to pick up a few jobs. Whether or not they will need additional manpower is another question.

As you see in this newsletter, we have enclosed, for your information, the list of all the endorsed candidates for the upcoming election. We will be asking for assistance in various campaigns. Danny Beavers will serve as the Political Director in Northern New Mexico, Dan Glass in Central New Mexico, Jerry Vaughn in Southern New Mexico and George Riley in the Four Corners and Western regions of New Mexico. This, as it is with all elections, is very important. We do not have a lot to win this November, but we sure have a lot to lose!

REPORT FROM BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE

R. DANIEL BEAVERS

I will begin this month’s report by wishing each and every one of our members and their families a very safe and happy Labor Day. Next, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members who came before me and sacrificed so much throughout the years so that I could have the opportunity to, not only belong to, but work through such a great organization. The ability to have learned a trade that I can support my family with and that no one can ever take away is something that I will be eternally grateful for. Now for the work, the calls remain very slow in my area. Yearout has placed a handful of calls for the Presbyterian Hospital, the westside UNMH Hospital has still not been awarded. At the Intel Site we have seen a few call for Jacks Mechanical but JBH has been laying off more than we have been dispatching. We are still having issues with members of Local No. 412 working for non-union contractors at the Intel Site. Currently the non-union out number Local No. 412 members four to one. In other words, the non-union has approximately 400 crafts on site and we have less than 100. With members of Local 412 working for the non-union the are utilizing the skills our training dollars have supplied them and are helping these contractors successfully complete the projects they have been awarded, I do not see how we can ever reclaim a foot hold at the Intel Site and we will only continue a slow and steady decline. So with that I am asking, once again, if you see a member of Local 412 working for a non-union contractor please bring them up on charges with the Executive Board.

REPORT FROM BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE

GEORGE RILEY

The work in the 4/Corners will begin to pick up shortly after the Labor Day holiday. EESI has put members to work on short turnaround projects and will continue to do so throughout the fall at San Juan Generating Station. The calls will be sporadic and short in duration as the major outage work was done in the spring. We do not expect much advance notice prior to dispatch since PNM will release work on short notice. EESI will be doing a substantial amount of work at Reeves Station throughout the fall with work scheduled to begin on September 13th. Manpower totals have not yet been determined and we will report as information becomes available. There will be a need for welders and some fitters as well. 4/Corners Power Plant has several members working for Day and Zimmerman. The forecast for work is a bit up in the air at this writing, as we are now working under a different labor agreement at this facility. APS has indicated this will generate more work for our signatory contractor, but time will be the best measure to see if that comes into fruition. We will be holding UA Weld Certification Training on September 11th and as usual, the available slots have filled quickly. Those members needing continuity are encouraged to schedule with Farmington office in order to accommodate your needs on that date. Lastly, we are having our annual CLC picnic on Sunday, September 5th, at Berg Park from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m. We encourage everyone to attend one of the largest labor events in the southwest and celebrate OUR day!

REPORT FROM BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE

JERRY VAUGHN

The work situation in the month of August has held steady. Midwest Mechanical has work at  the University Hospital in El Paso. The work has been steady for the last year, but there will be possible lay-offs in September. Goyette has work at Fort Bliss for the next year. We signed Rand, a new contractor, last month and they have hired two hands to do a demolition in Fort Bliss. They will hopefully be hiring four more hands next month to reinstall boilers and chillers at Fort Bliss. B&H has the school in Tularosa and A-Mountain High School in Las Cruces. They are also starting work on the new bookstore at New Mexico State University. They will probably call for six hands in the following month. Enoch Mechanical has the work on the Space Port but it has been on hold for about two weeks. It should start up again next week. They also have the work on the school in Artesia. They are also starting the remodel and expansion on the jail in Silver City. They should be putting a call in sometime this month for four hands. Yearout Mechanical is finishing up at the hospital in Fort Bayard and finishing the work at Las Cruces Convention Center. They are transferring hands to the prison in Las Cruces. I don’t think there will be any new hires for that job. Miller Bonded has the Peach Tree Middle School in Las Cruces and is finishing up on that job. Shambaugh & Sons has the project at Dairy Concepts in Portales although it has been pushed back to possibly February. HY-Tech is working at LES in Eunice and probably won’t need any more hands for a while. The good news is that all of our aluminum welders for HY-Tech and Intermech have passed their welding test. This is due to the great training they received from Justin Forni and the JATC. Once again, 412 has shown we have the best trained and most qualified workforce. Hope everyone has a great Labor Day!

REPORT FROM FINANCIAL SECRETARY-TREASURER

JOHN CASE

The Health and Welfare fund is doing very well. We were able to add to the benefits, Wellness for Dependent children to be covered 100% in network, 80% out of network up to $500.00 per child per year. Immunizations for dependent children are covered 100% in network, 80% out of network. There is no deductible for either of these services.

Manhours are holding steady. There have not been very many call outs this last month although the layoffs have slowed down also. We have been able to get some members out in Austin and now Phoenix is starting to need Orbital Welders and Detailers. Please call Raymond or myself if you are interested in these jobs.

The Annual Awards Banquet will be on October 9th at the Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town. I urge everyone to attend. We have a great evening with the long time members that built the foundation of this great Union we belong to. I will be getting more information out in the near future. I thank all of the members that are getting Years of Service Awards this year in advance for what you have done for the success Local of 412.

REPORT FROM The SPECIAL REPRESENTITIVE

Raymond Sanchez

The work is still slow around the country but there still are combo welder calls around. Most locals have fitters and plumbers on their out of work list. Austin has started to get some people but have not made it an open call. If locals are taking people it’s for specialty skills such as orbital welder and detailers. Some locals are also requiring T.W.I.C. cards and OSHA 30. Take advantage of the Training Center and again work on your state license. Hopefully next month I’ll have better news.

I would like to thank the HVAC Service Techs who took the time to come to the area meeting in July at the El Paso hall. There will be a HVAC Service Tech meeting every other month in El Paso. The plan is for the fourth Thursday of every other month. Watch the newsletter for the announcement. I am focusing on the HVAC Service industry as suggested by SWPT leadership and see that this market is a rapidly growing one with many opportunities for our members who choose to enter this career field. I would really appreciate any input, suggestions or help members may have to offer in the HVAC Service industry. Please feel free to contact me.
